Quick answer: in Northern Virginia, professional kitchen cabinet installation runs about $75 to $175 per linear foot for labour, which puts a typical 20 linear foot kitchen at roughly $1,500 to $3,500 to install, separate from the cabinets themselves. Most installs take two to four days once the cabinets are on site.

Cabinet installation is the step where a kitchen either comes together or quietly goes wrong. The cabinets you chose matter less than whether the person hanging them knows what to do when the wall is out of plumb by half an inch, which in a Northern Virginia house built in 1978 it almost certainly is.

This guide covers what installation costs here, how long it takes, what a professional install includes, and how to tell good work from work that will haunt you every time a door swings open on its own.

Kitchen Cabinet Installation Cost in Northern Virginia

Installation is usually quoted by linear foot, measured along the run of cabinets. A standard 10×10 kitchen is about 20 linear feet.

Scope Cost per linear foot 20 LF kitchen
Labour only, new cabinets $75 – $175 $1,500 – $3,500
Labour plus removal of old cabinets $95 – $215 $1,900 – $4,300
Stock cabinets supplied and installed $150 – $350 $3,000 – $7,000
Semi-custom supplied and installed $250 – $700 $5,000 – $14,000
Custom supplied and installed $600 – $1,400 $12,000 – $28,000

How to read these figures. Planning ranges for Northern Virginia as of October 2026, drawn from our own installation work and national 2026 labour data adjusted for this market. Not quotes, and not a survey of competitor bids.

Supplied-and-installed figures in particular vary more widely than any table suggests, because “semi-custom” and “custom” mean different things at different suppliers. Published figures for the same tier can differ by a factor of two between markets and vendors. Treat the tiers as relative steps rather than absolute brackets.

Labour-only figures assume cabinets delivered to site, a standard layout, and walls that need normal shimming. They exclude countertops, plumbing and electrical, flooring, drywall repair, crown or toe-kick molding beyond basic trim, and appliance panel fitting.

Regional variation is real and worth seeing. USA Cabinet Store’s 2026 Orlando installation guide reports average labour of $3,657 to $5,383 per kitchen there, drawn from 260 completed projects through May 2026. Northern Virginia labour rates run higher than Orlando’s, which is the single biggest reason national calculators come in low for this market.

Some installers quote hourly instead, commonly $40 to $80 per hour in this market. Hourly suits small jobs like hanging four uppers in a laundry room. For a full kitchen, insist on linear foot or a fixed project price, because hourly on a job with unknowns is a quote that can move.

How Long Does Cabinet Installation Take?

This is the second thing everyone asks, and the answer people find online is usually wrong because it only counts hanging time.

Kitchen Install time With removal of old cabinets
Small, under 15 LF 1 to 2 days 2 to 3 days
Standard, 20 to 25 LF 2 to 3 days 3 to 4 days
Large with island, 30 LF plus 3 to 5 days 4 to 6 days
Custom with integrated panels and trim 5 to 8 days 6 to 10 days

An island typically adds about half a day on its own, because it has to be positioned precisely in open floor and often carries electrical or plumbing connections.

That is install time only. The honest answer to “how long until my kitchen is finished” is longer, because cabinets sit in the middle of a sequence.

The bigger variable sits before installation: lead time on the cabinets themselves. In-stock cabinets can arrive in under a week, while custom orders commonly run up to twelve weeks, a range USA Cabinet Store also reports across its projects. Across the whole kitchen, from first meeting to finished room, eight to sixteen weeks is normal. Choosing a custom door style can add more calendar time than every other decision combined.

The part that surprises people: countertops cannot be measured until the cabinets are in. Templating happens on the installed, levelled cabinets, not on drawings. After templating comes one to three weeks of fabrication before the countertop arrives.

So from cabinet install to a working kitchen with a sink is typically two to four weeks, not two to four days. Our countertop cost guide explains that gap in detail. Plan meals around it.

What a Professional Install Actually Includes

Quotes vary enormously in what they cover, which is why two installation prices are rarely comparable. A full-scope install should include:

  • Checking the delivery against the order before anything goes on a wall, including doors, drawer fronts, panels, trim and hardware. Finding a missing panel on day one costs a day. Finding it on day three costs a week.
  • Locating and marking studs, and establishing a level line around the room from the highest point of the floor.
  • Hanging uppers first in most cases, so installers are not reaching over base cabinets.
  • Shimming and levelling every cabinet in both directions.
  • Joining cabinets to each other with proper cabinet screws through the face frames or sides, not drywall screws.
  • Scribing to the wall where gaps show, and fitting filler strips at the ends of runs.
  • Cutting for plumbing, electrical and vents in the cabinet backs.
  • Hanging and adjusting doors and drawers so gaps are even and soft-close hardware works properly.
  • Toe kick, light rail and crown where specified.
  • Cleanup and debris removal.

What is usually not included unless you ask: removal and disposal of old cabinets, countertop work, plumbing disconnect and reconnect, electrical changes, flooring, drywall repair behind removed cabinets, and painting.

Scribing is how a square cabinet meets a wall that is not.

Why Installation Is Skilled Work

Here is the thing that separates a good install from a bad one, and it has nothing to do with the cabinets.

No wall is plumb and no floor is level. In older Northern Virginia housing stock, and plenty of newer builds too, a wall can be out by half an inch over a ten foot run and a floor can slope noticeably from one end of the kitchen to the other. Cabinets, meanwhile, are manufactured square to within a fraction of a millimetre.

The entire craft of installation is reconciling those two facts. That is what shims, scribing and filler strips are for. An installer who sets cabinets to the floor rather than to a level line produces a run where the countertop has a visible wave in it and the doors do not line up. One who sets everything to a level line and shims the gaps produces a kitchen that looks like it grew there.

What this means for your quote. If an installer looks at your kitchen and mentions that the floor drops toward the back door, or that the corner is out of square, that is a good sign. They are pricing reality. An installer who quotes a full kitchen without looking at the room is pricing a kitchen that does not exist.

No wall is plumb and no floor is level. Reconciling that is the entire craft.

Removing the Old Cabinets

Removal costs less than installation, but it is still real labour and it reveals things.

Removal is normally priced by kitchen size, at roughly $15 to $20 per linear foot:

Kitchen size Removal cost
Small, 12 to 20 linear feet $180 – $400
Average, 20 to 30 linear feet $400 – $600
Large, 30 to 50 linear feet $600 – $1,000

Disposal is usually separate. A dumpster runs roughly $280 to $490 for a week including delivery, pickup and dump fees. Some installers include haul-away, some do not, so ask which applies. The other variables are whether the cabinets come out in pieces or intact, and whether they were fixed with construction adhesive, which turns a clean removal into drywall repair.

Behind old cabinets you commonly find unpainted drywall, old wallpaper, abandoned wiring, plumbing that was never meant to be seen, and occasionally water damage under a sink base that nobody knew about. None of that is the installer creating problems. Budget a small contingency for it rather than being surprised.

If your cabinets are structurally sound and you like the layout, cabinet refacing replaces doors, drawer fronts and veneers without removal at all, and replacing versus painting compares the other route.

Supply and Install, or Buy Elsewhere and Hire Separately?

Both are legitimate. The difference is who owns the problem when something is wrong.

Consideration Supply and install, one company Buy cabinets, hire installer
Damaged or missing parts They order the replacement You coordinate between two parties
Measurement errors One party is accountable Supplier blames installer, installer blames supplier
Price Often a better combined number Can be lower if you source well
Scheduling Coordinated with delivery You manage the timing
Warranty Single point of contact Split between product and workmanship

The split approach works when you have time, a good installer already, and a supplier who measured accurately. It fails most often on measurement, because a cabinet order placed from a drawing rather than a site measure can be a quarter inch out across a run, and nobody discovers it until install day.

Big Box Installation vs a Local Installer

Home Depot, Lowe’s and IKEA all offer installation, typically at $69 to $119 per linear foot when you buy the cabinets from them. The work is almost always subcontracted to a regional crew.

That can be perfectly fine for a straightforward stock kitchen. It gets harder when the job is not straightforward: an out-of-square room, an island with electrical, integrated appliance panels, or anything needing judgement on the day. You are then coordinating through a retailer rather than talking to the person holding the level.

The practical question is not which is better in the abstract. It is whether you can speak directly to the installer before the job, and who you call on day two when something does not fit.

What Goes Wrong

Cabinets set to the floor instead of a level line

The single most common serious error. It looks acceptable until the countertop goes on and the gap at the backsplash varies along the run.

Drywall screws instead of cabinet screws

Drywall screws are brittle and shear under load. Loaded uppers have come off walls because of it. Cabinet screws are not expensive and this is not a corner anyone should cut.

Drywall screws are brittle and shear under load. Loaded uppers have come off walls because of it.

Missed stud, or hitting only drywall anchors

Uppers carry serious weight once loaded with dishes. They need to be fixed into framing.

Appliance openings off by a fraction

A range needs its specified opening, and a dishwasher needs clearance to open with the handle on. These are measured to the manufacturer’s spec sheet, not estimated.

Doors never adjusted at the end

Soft-close hinges adjust in three directions. A finished install has even gaps and doors that close the same way. Walking off without that final pass is the mark of a rushed job.

How to Inspect the Work

You do not need tools to check most of this. Walk the kitchen before final payment:

  • Sight down the run of doors. Gaps should be consistent. A door that tapers tells you the cabinet beside it is not plumb.
  • Open and close everything. Every door and drawer, including the awkward corner. Soft-close should engage smoothly.
  • Check the filler strips. At the end of a run and against walls, scribing should follow the wall without a visible wedge of daylight.
  • Look at the toe kick for a consistent line and no gaps at the floor.
  • Put a level on a few cabinet tops if you have one. Front to back as well as left to right.
  • Open the sink base and look at how the plumbing cutouts were made. Neat holes suggest care throughout.

Raise anything you find before the countertop is templated. Afterwards, fixing a cabinet means removing a countertop.

Do You Need a Permit?

Replacing cabinets in the same layout, without moving plumbing or electrical, is generally treated as cosmetic work rather than a permit-triggering project in Fairfax County. Requirements are set locally and differ across Northern Virginia jurisdictions, so confirm with your building department before starting.

If the project moves the sink, relocates the range, adds circuits for an island, or takes out a wall, permits come back into play. Our Northern Virginia permits guide covers where that line sits.

Frequently Asked Questions for Kitchen Cabinet Installation Northern Virginia

How much does kitchen cabinet installation cost in Northern Virginia?

Labour runs about $75 to $175 per linear foot, putting a typical 20 linear foot kitchen at roughly $1,500 to $3,500 to install. Add roughly $180 to $1,000 to remove the old cabinets, depending on kitchen size, with disposal often billed separately. Supplied and installed, stock cabinets run $150 to $350 per linear foot, semi-custom $250 to $700, and custom $600 to $1,400.

What is the labor cost to install kitchen cabinets?

In this market, $75 to $175 per linear foot, or $40 to $80 per hour where an installer quotes hourly. Hourly works for small jobs. For a full kitchen, ask for linear foot or a fixed project price so the number cannot drift.

How long does it take to install kitchen cabinets?

Two to three days for a standard 20 to 25 linear foot kitchen, one to two days for a small one, and three to five days for a large kitchen with an island. Add a day or two if old cabinets are being removed, and considerably longer for custom work with integrated panels and trim.

How long does it take to install kitchen cabinets and countertops?

Longer than people expect. Cabinets take two to three days, but countertops cannot be templated until the cabinets are installed and levelled, and fabrication then takes one to three weeks. From cabinet install to a working kitchen with a sink is typically two to four weeks.

How long does it take to install cabinets in a small kitchen?

Usually one to two days for under 15 linear feet, or two to three days including removal of the old cabinets. Small kitchens are not always faster per foot, because corners and tight runs need more fitting than a long straight wall.

How much does it cost to remove and install kitchen cabinets?

Removal runs roughly $15 to $20 per linear foot, which is about $180 to $400 for a small kitchen, $400 to $600 for an average one and $600 to $1,000 for a large one, on top of installation. Disposal is often separate, with a dumpster around $280 to $490 for a week. Cabinets fixed with construction adhesive cost more to remove because they damage the drywall coming off, which adds repair.

What does cabinet installation include?

A full-scope install covers checking the delivery, marking studs, establishing a level line, hanging and shimming every cabinet, joining them with proper cabinet screws, scribing and filler strips, cutting for plumbing and electrical, adjusting all doors and drawers, fitting toe kick and trim, and cleanup. It usually excludes countertops, plumbing, electrical, flooring, drywall repair and painting unless stated.

Should I buy cabinets and hire an installer separately?

It can save money if you have a good installer and an accurate site measure. The risk is accountability: when a run is a quarter inch out or a panel arrives damaged, the supplier and installer each point at the other. A single company supplying and installing owns that problem.

Do installers remove the old cabinets?

Often, but not always included by default. Ask explicitly whether removal, disposal and any resulting drywall repair are in the quote. It is one of the most common gaps between two bids that otherwise look similar.

Why do my cabinet doors not line up?

Usually because the cabinets were not shimmed plumb, or because the doors were never adjusted after hanging. Soft-close hinges adjust in three directions, and a finished install includes that pass. Uneven gaps down a run of doors almost always point back to levelling rather than to the doors themselves.

Can kitchen cabinets be installed on uneven floors?

Yes, and in Northern Virginia they usually have to be. The installer establishes a level line from the highest point of the floor and shims every cabinet up to it, then hides the variation behind toe kick and scribe. Setting cabinets directly on an uneven floor is the error, not the condition itself.

Do I need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets?

Usually not. Replacing cabinets in the same layout without moving plumbing or electrical is generally treated as cosmetic in Fairfax County. Rules are local and vary across Northern Virginia, so confirm with your building department. Moving the sink, relocating the range or adding circuits changes the answer.
